Robert Durst of HBO’s ‘The Jinx’ Says He ‘Killed Them All’

MARCH 15, 2015

Since his first wife vanished more than three decades ago, Robert A. Durst, the eccentric and estranged son of one of New York’s most prominent real estate dynasties, has lived under the suspicious gaze of law enforcement officials in three states.

They have followed his path from New York City to Los Angeles, where one of his closest friends was found dead in her home in 2000. They have tracked him to Galveston, Tex., where he fled after investigators reopened the case of his wife’s disappearance, and where he posed as a mute woman and shot and dismembered a neighbor in 2001.

Mr. Durst was acquitted in the Texas killing, and was never arrested in the disappearance of his wife or the death of his friend. But on Saturday, he found himself in custody once again, arrested on a charge of murder as he walked into a New Orleans hotel he had checked into under a false name.

On Sunday night, in the final moments of the final episode of a six-part HBO documentary about him, “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst,” Mr. Durst seemed to veer toward a confession that could lift the shroud of mystery that surrounds the deaths of three people over the course of three decades.

“What the hell did I do?” Mr. Durst whispers to himself in an unguarded moment caught on a microphone he wore during filming. “Killed them all, of course.”

In the years since his wife, Kathleen Durst, disappeared in 1982 after spending the weekend at the couple’s country home in Westchester County, Mr. Durst has bounced in and out of jail for other crimes, cut ties with his family, remarried, and sued his brother for a $65 million share of the family fortune. Through it all, he has maintained his innocence in the disappearance of his wife, while also denying any role in the 2000 death of the Los Angeles friend, Susan Berman.

His arrest on Saturday in a Marriott on Canal Street in New Orleans was in connection with Ms. Berman’s death, though the Westchester authorities said they were still investigating him in his wife’s case. Mr. Durst was walking toward an elevator and mumbling to himself when F.B.I. agents intercepted him at the hotel, a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation said. He had checked in under the name Everett Ward, not the first time he had used an alias.

Mr. Durst is believed to have left Houston in a Toyota Camry on March 10, headed for New Orleans. Investigators involved in the case said they feared that the renewed attention brought by “The Jinx” would lead him to try to flee the country. Mr. Durst will plead not guilty, said one of his lawyers, Dick DeGuerin, who helped win Mr. Durst’s acquittal in Galveston in 2003 and who said he expected to head Mr. Durst’s defense team in Los Angeles.

“The rumors that have been flying for years will now get tested in court,” Mr. DeGuerin said.

As he watched the documentary Sunday night with the filmmakers, James McCormack, the brother of Kathleen Durst, said, “Closure is near at hand; I feel in my heart.”

It was Mr. Durst himself who may have set the latest twist in his bizarre saga in motion. Los Angeles prosecutors reopened their investigation into Ms. Berman’s execution-style murder only after Mr. Durst agreed to a series of interviews with the producers of “The Jinx,” Andrew Jarecki and Marc Smerling.

The amount of press coverage Mr. Durst has generated is topped only by the volume of work he has made for his lawyers and police investigators in Westchester, Los Angeles, Galveston and beyond. Yet he had rebuffed overtures from journalists until he saw “All Good Things,” a lightly fictionalized film the producers had previously made of his life in 2010, and approached them to tell his story.

“I will be able to tell it my way,” he said in the second episode of “The Jinx.”

In a more recent interview, he brushed off the possibility that the documentary would whet prosecutors’ appetites, saying: “It’s so long ago. Some D.A. would have to commence a budget-busting investigation. I don’t see that happening.”

By then, a new investigation was already encircling him.

“These two producers did what law enforcement in three states could not do in 30 years,” said Jeanine F. Pirro, the former Westchester County district attorney, whose office investigated Kathleen Durst’s disappearance for six years. “Kudos to them. They were meticulous. They were focused. They were clear.”

The filmmakers spent nearly 10 years researching Mr. Durst’s story: his upbringing as the eldest son of a family that controls 11 major skyscrapers in New York; his marriage to Ms. Durst, a medical student who lived in one of his family’s buildings, and its unraveling; his estrangement from his family after his father chose his younger brother, Douglas Durst, to run the business in 1994.

“We are relieved and also grateful to everyone who assisted in the arrest of Robert Durst,” Douglas Durst said in a statement on Sunday. “We hope he will finally be held accountable for all he has done.”

When prosecutors began pursuing new leads in his wife’s disappearance in 2000, Mr. Durst fled to Galveston, posing as a mute woman to rent a $300-a-month room in the Gulf Coast city. The next year, he was on the run again, with a warrant out for his arrest in the murder of Morris Black, a former merchant seaman who had lived across the hall in Galveston. After a nationwide manhunt, he was found in Bethlehem, Pa., where he had shoplifted a sandwich from a Wegmans supermarket.

Mr. Durst convinced a Texas jury that Mr. Black had died accidentally when the two men were grappling over a gun that discharged as they fell to the floor. He testified that he had carved up Mr. Black’s body until he was “swimming in blood.”

But he was still under suspicion in the death of Ms. Berman, a friend from graduate school with whom he had become so close that he walked her down the aisle at her wedding. She served as his spokeswoman after his wife’s disappearance, and investigators have long suspected that she knew his secrets.

The police had always known Mr. Durst was in California when Ms. Berman was killed, but could not place him in Los Angeles. They suspected he was the author of a short anonymous note sent to the Beverly Hills police on the same day Ms. Berman was found shot in the head, saying there was a “cadaver” in her home. But a handwriting analysis performed in 2003 was inconclusive.

The makers of “The Jinx” obtained a letter written by Mr. Durst to Ms. Berman in which the lettering of the address on the envelope appears identical to that of the “cadaver” note, down to the misspelling of Beverly Hills as “Beverley.”

In the final episode, a forensic document examiner the filmmakers asked to analyze Mr. Durst’s handwriting concluded that the tics in the note’s handwriting “are unique to one person and only one person.”

Mr. Jarecki, who was also the show’s director, and Mr. Smerling struggled with whether to bring the letter to law enforcement authorities. If they did so too soon, their lawyers told them, they could be considered law enforcement agents in the event of a prosecution, possibly jeopardizing the material’s admissibility in court, Mr. Jarecki said.

They also wanted to preserve a journalistic privilege not to disclose sources or testify in court. Still, Mr. Smerling said in an interview, “We had a moral obligation and an obligation to the families of the dead to see that justice was done.” They began speaking to Los Angeles investigators in early 2013.

Near the documentary’s end, the filmmakers were packing up their equipment when Mr. Durst asked to use the bathroom. He did not remove his wireless microphone as he closed the door, however, and began to whisper to himself.

More than two years passed after the interview before the filmmakers found the audio.

Mr. Durst’s private monologue makes for good television. But it is unclear whether the recording of his comments could be used in court, some legal experts said, since they were made in a bathroom when he was alone and had an expectation of privacy.

“That’s pretty damning stuff,” said Daniel J. Castleman, the former chief of investigations in the Manhattan district attorney’s office. “The question is: Is it admissible in court?”

But Daniel C. Richman, a former federal prosecutor who is a professor at Columbia University Law School, said the statements could be admitted in court “so long as it can be shown that the tape wasn’t tampered with.”

John Lewin, the lead prosecutor in the investigation into Ms. Berman’s death, declined to comment on Sunday. Mr. Lewin has built a reputation for winning convictions in cold cases, some of them decades old.

Now he faces an opponent who has, time and again, slipped out of law enforcement’s grasp.

They way he said it implies he has a split personality.. If convicted, my guess is that this ' evidence' will most likely be dismissed, Than this guy will serve time in a luxurious private clinic on taxpayers cost.

Sounds about right. There's probably something already worked out, jew to jew. This fleabag has already been free to roam, killing who knows how many people, for 3 decades after he killed his wife. He's getting up there in age, probably got sick of having to constantly dodge goy cops with an itch to put him away.

Two teens whose disappearances Durst is linked to

Kristen Modafferi

Karen Mitchell

Police investigating Robert Durst’s connection to missing California teens

Published: Tuesday, March 17, 2015, 2:39 PM Updated: Wednesday, March 18, 2015, 4:18 PM

Two teenage girls who went missing in California 18 years ago could come back to haunt Robert Durst.

Detectives searching for Karen Mitchell and Kristen Modafferi took a look at the mysterious Manhattan real estate scion back in 2003 when he was on trial in Galveston, Tex., for murdering and dismembering his neighbor.

Now that Durst will soon be heading back to Los Angeles to face a charge of murdering old friend Susan Berman in 2000, the search for 16-year-old Mitchell is back on the front burner, said an author who has covered Durst for years.

“Karen Mitchell's family spoke with the FBI as recently as a few months ago,” said Matt Birkbeck, who wrote "A Deadly Secret: The Strange Disappearance of Kathie Durst." “They brought up Durst.”

Kathie Durst was the cross-dressing multimillionaire’s first wife, who vanished in 1982.

Humboldt County District Attorney Maggie Fleming declined to discuss Durst or the Mitchell case.

“I really can't confirm or deny that Durst is a person of interest because anything said about the investigation could potentially hinder the investigation,” she said.

Modafferi’s dad said he hasn’t heard from the feds recently about his daughter, who was 18 when she vanished while visiting San Francisco. So he is reaching out to them.

“The Durst news has created enough of a question mark in my mind that I'm going to follow up with the FBI,” Bob Modafferi said. “If he was in that area where Kirsten went missing, it raises a bunch of potential red flags and questions.”

Mitchell, who vanished on Nov. 25, 1997, volunteered at a homeless shelter in Eureka, Calif., where Durst had been spotted, Birkbeck said.

Police said that after leaving the shelter, Mitchell walked over to the Bayshore Mall and visited her aunt, Annie Casper, at her shoe store.

Then Mitchell left for her aunt’s home — and has not been seen since.

Durst lived in the nearby town of Trinidad at the time and visited Casper’s store — while dressed in drag — at least four times,
Birkbeck said.

Investigators also looked at Durst in connection with Modafferi, a college student from North Carolina who went missing on June 23, 1997, Birkbeck said.

“The investigators told me that one of the suspects they were looking at had dressed in drag, he had some odd habits,” he said, referring to the Mitchell case. “After I finished the interview, I mentioned that I covered Robert Durst, who also dressed in drag. They wrote his name down and then I discovered he was living in San Francisco at the time. The police just jumped on it. They started putting pieces together.”

Bob Modafferi, 66, of Charlotte, N.C. confirmed that cops went “down that road to see if there was anything to it.”

“They did not indicate to us there’s anything there,” he said. “As time goes on, realistically the hope starts to dim, but it never dies out completely. There are cases you hear about that finally have a break. We will never lose faith or give up hope.”

Durst’s lawyers have said they know nothing about Mitchell or Modafferi and deny he had anything to do with Berman’s murder or Kathie Durst’s disappearance.

Durst was acquitted of killing neighbor Morris Black, even though he admitted chopping up his body.

(I don't remember seeing this information on the wikipedia page a few days ago)

Robert Alan Durst (born April 12, 1943)[1] is a son of New York City real estate mogul Seymour Durst and a brother of commercial developer Douglas Durst.   [...]

One of four children, Durst grew up in Scarsdale, New York. He is the son of real estate investor Seymour Durst and his wife Bernice Herstein. His siblings are Douglas, Thomas, and Wendy. Durst's paternal grandfather, Joseph Durst, a penniless Jewish immigrant tailor from Austria-Hungary, eventually became a very successful real estate manager and developer, founding the Durst Organization in 1927. His father Seymour became head of the family business in 1974 upon Joseph's death.[3] Durst claimed that at the age of seven his father walked him to a window where he saw his mother on a roof prior to her death.   ['She jumped' is the official story - sounds like the father pushed her]

Both of Durst's parents were jewish.

Robert Durst’s Jewish background

(from Jewish Journal, March 16 2015)

Jewish real estate scion Robert Durst, the subject of a recent HBO documentary miniseries, is currently awaiting extradition to Los Angeles after being arrested by the FBI in a New Orleans hotel Sunday evening, March 15. FBI officials say they have new evidence linking Durst to the 2000 killing of his friend Susan Berman in her Hollywood Hills home.

Durst is the son of Seymour Durst, a estate investor, and Bernice Herstein. He grew up in Scarsdale, N.Y., one of four siblings. Durst's grandfather, Joseph Durst, immigrated to America as a penniless Jewish immigrant tailor from Austria-Hungary, then went on to become a prosperous real estate manager and developer, starting in 1915 what eventually became the Durst Organization.

Robert Durst was once considered a possible successor to his father at the Durst Organization, a firm that now reportedly owns billions of dollars worth of property across midtown Manhattan, Robert Durst’s relationship with his family began to deteriorate in the early 1990s, after his brother Douglas was chosen to lead the organization following their father’s retirement.

Though the 71 year-old Durst waved his right to an extradition hearing Monday morning, March 16, his return to Los Angeles was delayed as local prosecutors considered filing charges against him, possibly in connection with marijuana police say he had in his possession at the time of his arrest, according to the Los Angeles Times.

In the final episode of “The Jinx,” the HBO documentary directed by Andrew Jarecki, Durst appears to walk into a bathroom during an interview and confess to the crime while talking to himself, apparently unaware that the microphone he was wearing was still recording.

“What the hell did I do,” Durst whispered. “Killed them all, of course.”

Jarecki acknowledged in interviews with various media outlets on Monday that he had been in communication with law enforcement for two years while working on “The Jinx,” though he denied having any knowledge or role in the timing of the arrest, which took place just hours before the final episode of the miniseries aired on television. The Los Angeles Police Department said Monday that there was no connection between the show’s finale and the decision to arrest, according to Times.

Durst has been a suspect or person of interest in three separate deaths, beginning with his former wife, Kathleen “Kathie” McCormack Durst, in 1982. Though police questioned Robert Durst during their investigation of Kathie Durst’s disappearance, he was never charged. Though Kathie Durst’s body was never found, she was declared dead in 2001.

In 2000, soon after New York State Police reopened the case into Kathie Durst’s disappearance, Robert Durst’s longtime friend Susan Berman was found shot execution-style in her Benedict Canyon home.

New York prosecutor Jeanine Pirro said Berman had been on a list of witnesses she wished to interview as part of her renewed investigation of Kathie Durst’s disappearance, fueling public suspicion that knowledge of Kathie’s death may have led to her own murder. Police again questioned Robert Durst but did not press charges.

Berman and Durst first met in the 1960s while they were both students at UCLA. An author and journalist, Berman was the daughter of Las Vegas organized crime figure David “Davie the Jew” Berman, who died during surgery in 1957, when Susan was still a child. Susan Berman eventually wrote a memoir, “Easy Street,” recounting her life as the daughter of mob royalty in Minneapolis and Las Vegas.

Less than a year after Berman’s death, Durst was arrested in Galveston, Texas after his elderly neighbor, Morris Black, was found dismembered and floating in the Galveston Bay. Durst had moved to Texas to avoid media attention as result of the Berman death, his lawyers said at the time.

Durst claimed self-defense to a charge of murder, though he admitted during the trial to dismembering and dumping Black’s body. A jury ultimately acquitted Durst of murder, but he received a five-year sentence after pleading guilty to jumping bond and tampering with evidence.

Over the years, Durst has had various other run-ins with the law.

Robert Durst sued the Durst family trusts and its trustees, though the case was settled in 2006 when the he agreed to give up his interest in the family fortune in exchange for a $65 million payout. He has long been estranged from his family, various members of which have, at different times, filed restraining orders against him.

Durst’s lawyer, Chip Lewis, told the Times that he does not expect Durst to be extradited to Los Angeles today.

About Robert Durst’s Current Wife, Debrah Lee Charatan

March 17, 2015

Of all the characters who cross paths with Robert Durst in The Jinx, perhaps the most enigmatic is Durst's second wife, Debrah Lee Charatan. First seen bailing Durst out of jail after his 2001 murder arrest, Charatan appears only in archival police interview footage, where she's a brash, sarcastic presence. (She declined to be interviewed for the documentary, perhaps wisely.) With little else to go on, both Jinx fans and the series itself have speculated on the exact nature of Charatan's relationship with Durst. As one interviewee put in in the penultimate episode, "A lot of people believe Debbie knows Bob’s secrets, whatever they may be."

As Durst's legal troubles have been well covered in the press, so, too, have various snippets of Charatan's biography. Here's what we know about her so far.

Like Durst, she's a powerful figure in New York City real estate.
Unlike Durst, it seems to be her passion. Charatan first came to fame in the 1980s, running all-female brokerage firm Bach Reality and telling Harper's Bazaar she had aspirations of being "a female Harry Helmsley." Alongside her son from her first marriage, she currently heads BCB Property Management, which has been instrumental in the gentrification of Crown Heights.

She met Durst in the late ’80s and dated him for at least two years.
According to the New York Times, the couple began dating in 1988, six years after Durst's first wife Kathleen disappeared. Both came from tragic families: Durst's mother had died in front of him, while Charatan's parents had survived the Nazi invasion of Poland, Sad which cost her father his foot. The pair moved into an Upper East Side apartment together in 1990, the same year Durst officially divorced his missing wife, but the cohabitation was short-lived. (She kept the apartment.) The pair kept in contact throughout Durst's travels in the ’90s, and she was reportedly a "lifeline" for him whenever he visited New York.

They were secretly married in December 2000.
The timing is important, as it's shortly after the Kathie Durst case was reopened, and only weeks before the death of Susan Berman. Their wedding was apparently a rushed affair — 15 minutes, one witness, a rabbi hired from the phone book. "Durst was rather taciturn," the rabbi later told the New York Daily News. "He was not buoyant and didn't smile." The Jinx implies Durst married Charatan to prevent her from testifying against him, and as for what was in it for her, a former co-worker told the Times, "For Debbie, it's all about the money. When she met Bob, she hit pay dirt."

Charatan was a frequent visitor during Durst's Galveston trial, and a confidante during his stint in jail.
As seen in The Jinx, Charatan was the driving force behind Durst's decision to fire attorney Michael Kennedy and go with a local lawyer, Dick DeGeurin. According to transcripts of jailhouse phone calls obtained by the New York Post, the decision was a purely mercenary one: Kennedy wanted to go with an insanity defense, which could jeopardize both Durst and Charatan's share of his family's fortune. (When Durst jumped bail, police prevented her from withdrawing $1.8 million from his accounts.) Other parts of the transcripts reveal Charatan saving Durst from potentially incriminating himself, interrupting him when he threatened revenge against Berman's friend Kim Lankford, and reminding him that his armed appearance outside his brother's house was a "suicide" attempt. Despite all this, Durst didn't fully trust Charatan, telling his sister their wedding was "a marriage of convenience ... I had to have Debrah to write my checks. I was setting myself up to be a fugitive." Later, Charatan appeared on what police claimed was Durst's "enemies list."

She's apparently still married to Durst, and handles his real-estate deals.
Charatan eventually moved out of the Fifth Avenue apartment she'd shared with Durst, and traded it up for another one; when she sold that apartment in November, the tabloids still called her Durst's wife. Through BCB, she and Durst invested money from his trust fund in buildings in Williamsburg and Carroll Gardens, and flipped them for a $12 million profit last summer.

Re Reuters 3/18/15
Accused murderer Robert Durst deemed 'suicidal'
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/03/18/us-usa-durst-idUSKBN0ME29K20150318

Robert Durst, the real estate scion charged with first-degree murder, is suicidal, according statements by Louisiana authorities released on Wednesday after they moved him to a facility for acutely mentally ill inmates.

Awaiting extradition to California, the 71-year-old Durst was charged this week in Los Angeles County with killing longtime friend Susan Berman in 2000, and could face the death penalty if convicted.

In law enforcement's sights for decades, Durst prompted investigations across the country -- from Houston, where three of Durst's condominiums were searched on Tuesday, to northern California, where the disappearances of two teens in 1997 raised questions about his location at the time.

The heir to a New York real estate dynasty was arrested in New Orleans on Saturday with a handgun, marijuana, a fake ID and over $42,000 in cash, records show, one day before the airing of the final installment of an HBO documentary, "The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst."

In it, he was presented with evidence of similar handwriting on two envelopes, one from Durst and another likely from Berman's killer, and was later picked up by a microphone saying he "killed them all."

If HBO says he's guilty it must be true.  The power of Hollywood in the limelight, people can talk it up all they want, at least until he skirts death row and ends up in high-end lockup alongside Bernie Madoff.

The courtroom drama will displace concerns over Syrian refugees, the next round of attacks on Gaza budget shortfalls and also make for extended episodes of the series whose time has come.

Durst has more charismatic charm than Madoff and Strauss Kahn put together.  He's a likeable villain.

Durst is a vampiric beast. The only reasons he is still alive, and went unpunished for so long: 1) He is full-blooded jewish 2) He's a billionaire 3) US courts are up to their eyeballs in corruption, and run by jews 90% of the time

Accused murderer Robert Durst deemed 'suicidal'

Robert Durst, the real estate scion charged with first-degree murder, is suicidal, according statements by Louisiana authorities released on Wednesday after they moved him to a facility for acutely mentally ill inmates.   [...]

Looks like the media and 'authorities' are already preparing Durst's smooth transition into retirement. What business do the 'authorities' have making such official declarations and giving him an inkling of sympathetic characterization? If they were playing for the right side (justice), they would leave it for Durst's lawyers or some other slime

Lawyers: Millionaire Robert Durst illegally arrested
https://www.yahoo.com/tv/s/lawyers-millionaire-robert-durst-illegally-arrested-184629559.html

New Orleans -  Millionaire Robert Durst was illegally arrested on charges that he murdered a woman in California, as well as drug and weapons charges filed in New Orleans, attorneys said in court papers Friday.

In the papers filed at the State Criminal District Court in New Orleans, William Gibbens and Dick DeGuerin asked a magistrate judge to schedule a preliminary hearing so that they can prove that there is no probable cause to keep Durst jailed. They say he should be released.

It won't work this time, but the argument may save him later on.

They need to arrest everyone involved in the case (investigators, judges, DAs, jurors). Durst is a serial killer

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Police said Monday they’ve been investigating a link between the 1971 disappearance of a Middlebury College student and millionaire murder suspect Robert Durst.
Investigators have been aware for several years of a potential link between 18-year-old Lynne Schulze and Durst, who operated the All Good Things health food store in the town, the Middlebury Police Department said in a statement.
Schulze, a native of Simsbury, Connecticut, who entered Middlebury College as a freshman in September 1971, was last seen that December. Her missing-person flier shows her peering serenely through a loosely parted mane of light-brown hair.
